Oba of Benin prays for renewed tenure for president Tinubu, says throne not partisan
The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, has prayed for a renewed tenure for Nigeria’s president Bola Tinubu, ahead of the 2027 general election.
The Benin monarch gave his blessings during a visit to the royal palace by the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday.
The delegation which was led by the Director-General of the PCC, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, was received by the deputy governor of Edo State Charles Idahosa, on behalf of governor Monday Okpebholo, before introducing the team to the monarch.
Yari who conveyed the president’s message to the monarch, sought for royal blessings and prayers for the president in view of the forthcoming general election.
The Oba in turn thanked the campaign council for their visit, appreciating the president for the hospitality extended to him during his visit to the nation’s capital, Abuja.
The monarch noted that the Benin throne was not partisan, adding that his position should not be interpreted as support for any political party.
“The Benin throne is not partisan. There is no point for change for the sake of change. That is not to say that I belong to one party or the other.
“Is there anybody who is as perfect as I am talking now? Nobody. I love and like peace and tranquillity. I am American and British trained as a diplomat, and I say it the way it is,” he said.
The oba prayed for a renewed mandate for the president. “For somebody who is doing well, it is our prayer that he gets a renewed mandate,” he prayed.
He further urged Nigerians to join hands with the president to finish his work.
“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. If one is doing well, why not join hands with the President to do what he is doing well? Let President Tinubu finish the good work.”
The monarch called on opposition parties to support the president in implementing his ongoing programmes, urging them not to be too critical of the ruling party, but to function in their capacity as opposition for the betterment of the country.
Among the delegation were: Secretary to the government of the federation, George Akume; former Sokoto State governor, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko; former Kebbi State governor, Adamu Aleiro; former Kano State governor/former APC national chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; former Senate president Ayim Pius Ayim, former House of Reps speaker, Aminu Bello Masari and others.
