Netanyahu bloc ahead in Israel election with 54 seats, Eisenkot bloc 49, as vote count continues
The Benjamin Netanyahu bloc is currently ahead with 54 seats as vote count continues in the just concluded election in Israel.
The bloc of his closest rival Gadi Eisenkot currently has 49 seats, but neither has secured the majority needed to form a government.
Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu is calling for a strong right-wing government with his Likud platform set to be the biggest party.
Some minority parties have also secured a record number of seats as voters express optimism and a sense of history being made in an election which recorded the highest voter turnout since 1994.
No party has ever won a majority in the 120-seat Israeli parliament known as the Knesset, as most past governments have been formed through coalitions.
With about 85% of votes counted, Israel seems to be in political deadlock, as neither Netanyahu nor his key challenger Eisenkot, has sufficient seats for a majority.
Following the deadlock, all things being equal, Netanyahu may resort to persuading Eisenkot to join him in a national unity government, or try gaining majority by persuading ring-wingers from Eisenkot’s bloc to break away, or a whole new elections could be conducted while Netanyahu remains caretaker prime minister in the interim.
