Zidane names Messi greatest player in football history, as football icon gets Ballon d’Or nomination
Head coach of the French national team Zinedine Zidane, has named Argentine football icon and former captain, Lionel Messi, as the greatest player in football history.
“If anyone still has doubts about the GOAT debate, honestly, that person does not belong in football society,” the Real Madrid legend said, as quoted by Marca.
Speaking on Messi’s recent nomination for the 2026 Ballon d’Or at age 39, Zidane praised the Argentine’s ability to remain relevant among the world’s football elite at his age.
“I would vote for Messi 100 times,” Zidane said, according to Marca.
“I think people really don’t understand how incredible it is to still be among the best players in the world at 39 years old.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Messi won the award,” he said.
Messi remains the most decorated footballer in the history of the game, having won every major trophy, including the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
The Argentine legend announced his retirement from the Argentina national team after leading his nation to World Cup victory in 2022 and also leading his teammates to second place in the just-concluded FIFA 2026 World Cup.
