US midterm elections: Democrats take control of Senate, House of Reps
Taking lead in the ongoing midterm elections in the United States, Democrats will gain control of US Congress in January 2027, winning majority seats in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, as news sources now project.
Democrats were earlier projected to take control of the House, as they also picked up six key Senate seats during the midterm elections that held on Tuesday.
While several key Senate races are yet to be called, Democrats seems certain to have a unified control of Congress, come January 2027.
Republicans had a slight advantage prior to the election, having Senate majority seats of 53 (Democrats 47) and House seats of 219 (Democrats 214).
35 of the Senate seats and all 435 House seats were contested for in the just concluded midterms, with Democrats gaining victories in several Senate battleground races so far.
Senate battleground races yet to be decided as at the time of filing this report include the contest between Abdul El-Sayed and Mike Rogers in Michigan, and Susan Collins against Troy Jackson in Maine, among others.
Governorship races in Texas, Georgia, Ohio and Iowa have also been flipped by Democrats, with 36 gubernatorial contests holding across the country.
US president Donald Trump has blamed the losses suffered by some Republican candidates on the fact that he was not on the ballot.
“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” the president wrote on Truth Social.
