Gunmen abduct 14 students, teacher in Niger State
Students of an Islamic school and their teacher in Tungan-Bako village, Pandogari, Niger State, were on Saturday abducted by gunmen.
The students who were assisting their mallam harvest maize on his farm, according to reports, were attacked and whisked away alongside their teacher.
Spokesperson of the state police command, Wasiu Abiodun, clarified the number of abducted students to be 14, contrary to earlier media reports of 50.
He disclosed in a statement that the victims were students of an Islamiyya school, stating that a joint security operation was ongoing to rescue the kidnapped victims.
“On 31/10/2026 at about 12.30 pm, suspected bandits invaded Tungan-Bako village via Rafi LGA and abducted some persons working on the farm.
”Report further indicated that the abducted victims were about 14 students of an Islamiyya helping their Mallam to harvest maize on the farm, before the incident.
”However, joint security rescue efforts are ongoing. Further developments will be communicated,” the statement read.
While the Federal Government has been largely blamed for the rising spate of insecurity in the country, Niger State governor Umaru Bago has also been criticized for its failure to take drastic measures in addressing the security situation in the state.
Political activities ahead of the 2027 general election, seem to have taken prominence over germane issues like insecurity, economic downturns, social welfare, amongst others pressing sociopolitical concerns in the country.
