Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria dies in Türkiye
Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele has passed on in Türkiye. He died at the age of 50.
His death was disclosed by Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Kimiebi Ebienfa, the ministry’s spokesperson, stated that Lele passed away in the early hours of April 19 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye, after a protracted illness, while describing the deceased as a dedicated diplomat who served his nation with integrity.
“The late Ambassador Lele, until his death after a protracted illness, was the Director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Ambassador Lele, a career diplomat, was recently appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Ambassador-designate to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, following the Nigerian Senate’s confirmation of his nomination,” the statement read.
“Ambassador Lele was known for his intellectual depth, strategic insight and commitment to the advancement of Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives,” it added.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed described the late diplomat as “hardworking, humble and fine officer, who will be sorely missed by the ministry.”
His demise was considered by the ministry a “monumental loss not only to his immediate family but also to the entire Foreign Service community and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
During his career as a diplomat, he served in Nigerian missions in Lomé, Riyadh and Berlin.
Lele whose remains were received by the Permanent Secretary Ahmed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, was buried in Kano on Wednesday.
Condolences were further extended to the family and associates of the late diplomat by the ministry, as well as to the government and people of Bauchi State where the deceased hailed from.
