Netanyahu calls UN delegates who staged walkout ‘moral cowards’, says victory is Israel’s only option
Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday delivered a stunning speech at the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) holding in New York, United States.
As has been the case since the commencement of the Israel-Gaza conflict, delegates of countries sympathetic to the Palestinian cause began to leave the hall as soon as Netanyahu took to the podium.
The Israeli prime minister in his opening statement announced that other “moral cowards” yet to leave should join their counterparts.
“Mr. President, Before I begin, just a quick announcement: If there are any other moral cowards who haven’t yet left this hall, please do so now. Thank you very much,” Netanyahu said.
The prime minister went further to say that he drew a red line 14 years ago to halt Iran’s nuclear ambition and “murderous dictatorship”.
“I vowed to prevent Iran from developing atomic bombs, nuclear weapons aimed at destroying Israel, nuclear weapons that could threaten the entire world. That’s exactly what we did.
“Devastating Iran’s nuclear facilities was hard. It was very hard to do. But for me, it was one of the easiest decisions I’ve ever had to make as prime minister. Because if we hadn’t done it, we would all be dead,” he stressed.
He asserted that it was therefore ironical, that in defending itself, Israel is also defending many of the countries whose delegates left the hall at the commencement of his speech.
“In fact, I want you to know that many of their leaders even thank us privately for taking out Iran’s nukes. It’s hard to imagine more mind-blowing hypocrisy, but that’s exactly what it is,” he stated.
Netanyahu said the reason Israel is winning is the same reason given to him by his late brother Yoni Netanyahu, who led a squad of soldiers to free Israeli hostages in Uganda.
“’We’re going to win, We have no other choice.’ I remember those words as if it was yesterday,” he said.
Yoni Netanyahu had in 1976 led a group of Israeli soldiers to Uganda, where they successfully rescued 103 Jewish hostages, but unfortunately lost his life in the mission.
The Israeli prime minister further thanked the Uganda government for recently erecting a statue of Yoni “in the place where he fell,” adding that his brother’s statement —that Israel is going to win because it has no other choice — remains true today.
He recalled the October 7, 2023 massacre, where thousands of Palestinian terrorists stormed into Israel from Gaza, commiting what Netanyahu termed “the worst slaughter of Jews since the Holocaust,” killing over 1,200 Israeli citizens.
“They went house to house shooting Israeli civilians point blank. They did so with fiendish glee. With sadistic joy they live-streamed as they murdered.
“And who did they murder? The very Israelis, their neighbors, who gave them jobs, who picked up Palestinian children at the Gaza border and drove them to Israeli hospitals for cancer treatment, and then brought them back. Can you imagine such monstrosity?
“These Hamas monsters, they slaughtered Holocaust survivors. They burned babies alive in front of their parents. They beheaded our men. They brutally raped our women and then they murdered them,” he narrated.
He said that as a result, for the past three years, Israel has been fighting a seven-front war with “Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, Iran, militias in Iraq, militias in Syria, and palestinian terrorists in Judea Samaria,” who have all ganged up to wipe Israel off the map.
Netanyahu however said they failed “because instead of collapsing, we delivered crippling blows to all of them.”
“With our great American friends, we crushed Iran’s army, navy, air force and nuclear facilities. Israel hammered Hamas. We pummeled Hezbollah. Remember the beepers? Well, I can tell you this, Hezbollah certainly remembers them.
“Guess what happened to the bulk of Hezbollah’s vast arsenal of 150,000 ballistic missiles and rockets, all aimed at our civilians? They’re gone. Hezbollah’s leaders, dead. Their spirit, broken,” he stated.
He praised the United States’ collaboration with Israel to battle the “barbarians”.
“In this battle against the barbarians, we’ve had no greater partner than president Trump. I thank him for his bold leadership. He boldly confronted an enormous danger to America, Israel and the world,” Netanyahu said.
He also acknowledged the courage of Israelis who were willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with his administration to combat the terror regime in Iran.
The prime minister said Israelis were courageous to withstand “1,000 massive ballistic missiles that Iran rained down on our cities, on our civilians.”
“Ladies and gentlemen, You’re sitting here, in the General Assembly Hall of the UN. Do you know what one ton, just one, one tone ballistic missile would do if it hits this place? It would obliterate the entire compound. In fact, two such missiles would obliterate the UN.
“I salute the courage of the people of Israel. I salute the courage of our brave soldiers—Jews, Christian, Druze, Muslim. The most moral army in the world, the IDF,” he added.
