Lagos airport: No fire outbreak at terminal 2, FAAN clarifies
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has said there was no fire outbreak at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The disclosure, contained in an updated statement by FAAN was in contrast to initial concerns which prompted an emergency response on Sunday.
The authority said the smoke observed within the terminal resulted from the discharge of the facility’s FM-200 fire suppression system and not a fire incident, based on preliminary findings.
FAAN noted that investigations were ongoing to determine the reason behind the activation of the system, confirming that no casualties or injuries were recorded.
“Preliminary findings indicate that there was no fire at the terminal. The smoke observed within the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system. The reason for the activation of the fire suppression system is currently being investigated,” FAAN said.
The authority which earlier announced an incident at Terminal 2, deployed its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) to the scene as a precautionary measure while emergency protocols were activated.
FAAN further said normal operations had resumed at the terminal.
“Normal operations have since resumed at the terminal, while detailed investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident,” the statement read.
FAAN thanked passengers and other stakeholders for their cooperation, adding that passengers were being processed and flight activities progressing as scheduled.
It also stressed on the authority’s unwavering commitment to the safety and security of airport operations.
With thousands of domestic and international passengers daily, the Murtala Muhammed International Airport has become Nigeria’s busiest aviation hub.
