Israel shuts British consulate in Jerusalem over UK sanctions
Israeli government has announced a series of countermeasures against the United Kingdom in response to British sanctions targeting West Bank settlements.
This was disclosed on Tuesday by Israel’s foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar who stated that the Israeli government had decided to shut the British consulate in Jerusalem, in response to “a series of anti-Israel decisions by the Labour government over the past two years.”
Also among the countermeasures were the expelling of British representatives from the US-backed International Gaza Support Center in Kiryat Gat and the termination of British involvement in the support team in Ramallah training Palestinian authority security forces.
According to Sa’ar, Israel had also barred 12 British elected officials and citizens “involved in antisemitic and anti-Israel activity.”
This comes shortly after UK’s foreign secretary Edward Miliband announced a boycott of goods from Israel-controlled West Bank in the House of Commons, with Israel accusing the UK of escalating its anti-Israel stance.
Sa’ar called Miliband’s accusations against Israel “outrageous and false,” stating that the UK sanctions were mere theatrics “for domestic political reasons ahead of the Labour Party conference taking place this month”.
“Unfortunately, there is a hostile Labour government in office that is systematically acting against Israel, and it will leave us no choice but to respond to its hostile moves,” Sa’ar stated.
