Dolly Parton: Trump orders US flags lowered one week in honour of late country music icon
United States president Donald Trump has ordered US flags to be flown at half-staff across the country for a week, in honor of the late country music icon Dolly Parton, who died at the age of 80.
Trump who disclosed in a Truth Social post shortly after Parton’s death was announced, said he directed American flags to be lowered for the next week beginning at 6pm on August 25.
Trump wrote in the post:
“Very sad to report that Dolly Parton, one of the greatest Country singers, and far beyond, EVER, has just passed away. This is a true loss for millions of people. There has never been anyone like her, and never will.
“In her honor, I am lowering the American flag throughout the United States for a one week period beginning tonight at 6:00PM. Rest in Peace, Dolly! The World loves you.”
Her passing was announced on social media on Tuesday August 25, in a video message by Parton’s nephew Bryan Seaver, who represented the Parton and Owens family.
“Dolly has lived in the light, and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by [her husband] Carl, her parents, and countless others who have watched her and longed for her to meet them in the heavens,” Server said in the video.
Parton rose from poverty as a child in rural Appalachia in East Tennessee to become a country star in Nashville.
Often referred to as the “Queen of Country”, Parton was one of the most-honored female country performers in history, having received several accolades, including 11 Grammy Awards, three Emmy Awards, six Golden Globe awards, among others.
The late Parton was known for global hits such as Coat of Many Colours, Jolene, I Will Always Love You, 9 to 5, and other classics. She leaves behind decades-long legacy in music, film, business and philanthropy.
Her Imagination Library program has gifted more than 300 million books to children across the world for over 31 years, a philanthropic gesture for which she was also widely admired.
