Co-host USA knocked out of World Cup by Belgium in 4-1 defeat
The United States crashed out of the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a stunning 4-1 defeat from Belgium.
The United States became the third and final co-host to be knocked out of the World Cup.
The US starred striker Folarin Balogun in their starting line-up, after FIFA suspended his red cad following a review appeal by the United States president Donald Trump.
FIFA suspended the automatic one-match ban for 12 months, giving Balogun a chance to participate in the game against Belgium.
The game was largely dominated by Belgium as they took the lead in the ninth minute when De Ketlaere tapped in Nicolas Rankin’s pass to give the Belgians their first goal.
The US equalized in the 31st minute when Malik Tillman’s free-kick was deflected by Belgium’s Hans Vanaken.
Belgium however restored their lead two minutes later when De Ketelaere headed in Leandro Trossard’s cross.
Vanaken gave the European side their third goal, while Romelu Lukaku slotted in Belgium’s final goal with a low shot into the far corner from a tight angle.
Belgium will now clash with Spain in the quarter-finals in Los Angeles on Friday, after Spain beat Portugal 1-0 with a second-half stoppage time goal on Monday.
