Trump congratulates Democrats on midterm victories, says he wasn’t on ballot

US president Donald Trump has congratulated Democrats on their midterm election victories.

Speaking to the press via a phone call Trump said: “My message is, congratulations to the Democrats, and I look forward to working with you for the good of our country.”

Speaking on working with a democrat-controlled Congress Trump said both parties would be able to work things out.

“I know a lot of Democrats. I have total veto power and I’m sure we’ll be able to work things out.

“I think they’re gonna want to work with me. Otherwise I’d just veto everything and they’re not gonna want that.”

Trump blamed the losses suffered by some Republican candidates on the fact that he was not on the ballot.

“I feel that I wasn’t on the ballot, and there was nothing that could be done about that. If I was, we would have won.

“In some cases they didn’t like the candidates, and in some cases those candidates were not my friends and the base knows that better than anybody. And they stayed back.”

He added that voters did not turn out as expected.

“The people didn’t come out as they should have. If I were on the ballot they would have been out.”

Earlier on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

The Associated Press has called 98 out of the 100 Senate seats, of which, Democrats have 54 and Republicans have 44, with only 2 seats left to be officially called.

While Democrats will gain control of US Congress in January 2027, winning majority seats in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, they have no two-third majority in the Senate to impeach the president should they try to.

With just a simple majority, both the legislative and executive branches of US government would end up checking each other and making compromises.

Like the executive, Congress would also have to play by the rules in order to achieve anything meaningful, considering the president has veto power, as the legislative body lacks two-thirds to override the president.

It almost seems normal in American politics for sitting presidents to lose midterms. Obama lost Midterms twice in his time as president.
