Trump announces deal granting US permanent security control of Greenland
US president Donald Trump said the United States has reached a permanent deal with Denmark and Greenland which grants Washington total security control of Greenland.
This would include the ability to expand US military presence and prevent adversaries from establishing bases, deploying forces, or making sensitive investments in the territory.
Trump said the agreement gives the United States “permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland.”
“There will be NO COST to the United States!” Trump wrote in the announcement.
“At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America,” he said.
According to Trump, no US adversary would be permitted to establish a base or military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in the territory.
“For over 100 years, Presidents have known the strategic importance of Greenland, but NONE of them were able to do anything about it.
“I am proud to be the President that permanently and conclusively addressed this very important situation,” the US president said.
He said the arrangement was an “Infinite Life” agreement with “no end.”
Trump said the US would “immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland,” while cooperating with the residents on development and construction.
“This solution is a great one for the United States of America, Denmark, Greenland, and all of our Allies,” Trump added.
According to a US state department official who provided additional details about the development, the deal gives the United States a strategic advantage in North America, as it guarantees US security interests in the Arctic at no cost to the American taxpayer.
The official said the deal gives the US “the complete ability to do what it deems necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the American continent.”
This would include permanent access, basing and overflight rights, with the US military being able to increase the number of bases in Greenland as necessary.
He further said the agreement prohibits any non-NATO country from building a military base or maintaining troop presence in Greenland, unlike prior times when countries under NATO could be allowed to establish military facilities or send forces to Greenland.
