Trump approves $2.8bn arms sale to Israel
US president Donald Trump has approved a $2.8 billion arms sale to Israel, according to a US official cited by The New York Times.
The deal would be among the largest shipments of US munitions to Israel, as the proposed sale would include 40,000 one-tonne bombs, comprising 20,000 US-made MK-84 bombs and 20,000 BLU-117 bombs.
Reports say a 1,000-kilogram bomb can be lethal at distances of more than 300 metres and leave a crater up to 15 metres deep.
Israel would also receive as part of the munitions package, 20,000 I-2000 warheads designed to destroy bunkers. They detonate after penetrating an outer surface such as soil, rock or concrete.
From the deal it would seem the recent minor strains in the relationship between president Trump and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not impede the relationship between the two allied nations.
