World Cup: Paraguay beat Germany 4-3 on penalties to reach round of 16

Paraguay on Monday defeated Germany 4-3 on penalties to qualify for the Round of 16 in the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

This marks the first time Germany has ever lost a penalty shootout at a World Cup.

Julio Enciso gave Paraguay a lead before half-time, but Kai Havertz equalized for Germany at the 54th minute, which was his third goal of the tournament.

Paraguay held on to the draw, shocking Germany in an intense penalty shootout which resulted in a 4-3 victory.

The development marked another premature exit for Germany who were playing in their first knockout-stage appearance since winning the 2014 World Cup.

The victory was arguably Paraguay’s greatest win at the tournament, but they face a formidable adversary should France beat Sweden to qualify for the Round of 16.

Germany’s 7-1 win against Curacao in their opening match gave a glimpse of their attacking firepower, but they struggled to break through a compact Paraguay defence.

Paraguay withstood Germany’s set-piece barrage during the match and finally got themselves a monumental World Cup victory.
