Wike says emergency rule in Rivers ends September 18

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike said on Saturday that the state of emergency declared in Rivers State by the Nigerian President Bola Tinubu would expire on September 18.

He made the disclosure after casting his vote in the local government election which held on Saturday across Rivers State, noting that the State House of Assembly would be able to resume legislative duties with the end of the emergency rule.

Wike also commended the smooth conduct of the local government election, tagging it as peaceful and successful. “As far as we are concerned, this election is peaceful, people are trooping out and at the end of the day the election has been conducted successfully and peacefully.

“I do know that by September 18, the state of emergency will expire and the State Assembly will come back to their job and we will have a government at the grassroots level,” Wike said.

He further noted that the conditions were appropriate for lifting the emergency rule. “The coast is clear for the state of emergency to be lifted, being that the State Government has its representative and the local government has its representatives, so we are good to go,” he added.

Recall that President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State — suspending the Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the Deputy Governor and the State House of Assembly for six months, in order to avert political crises and a break down of law and order in the State.
