Wike-backed PDP announces Sandy Onor as flag bearer for 2027 presidential election

The Abdulrahman Mohammed-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), backed by the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesome Wike, has announced Senator Sandy Onor, former Cross River State governorship candidate, as its flag bearer for the 2027 presidential election.

The announcement was made by the party’s Presidential Primaries Collation Committee chairman, former governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, at the Wadata Plaza Abuja, on Tuesday.

Members of the committee said the exercise followed consultations and voice votes conducted among party members across the federation, with Senator Onor emerging as a consensus candidate after the collation and presentation of the party’s presidential primary results at the PDP headquarters.

Ortom stated that a consensus was arrived at after the committee engaged with party members across the 36 states and the FCT, resulting in the emergence of Senator Sandy Onor as the PDP consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

A certificate of return and the party’s flag was thereafter presented to Senator Onor as the party’s candidate.

In his acceptance speech, Onor who was the sole aspirant for the exercise, pledged to confront poverty and improve living conditions in rural areas.

“We are in this race to demonstrate that there is still a lot to do for Nigerians. Rural Nigeria, where the majority of our people live, has been neglected by successive administrations.

“If I am able to address rural poverty and take our people as seriously as they ought to be taken, Nigeria will move forward.

“I’m the only candidate running with experience across the entire trajectory of our political hierarchy. I know exactly what to do,” he said.

He further vowed to tackled the root cause of insecurity through gainful employment.

“Insecurity is fundamentally a function of rural poverty. Gainful employment and economic opportunities for young people would reduce recruitment into criminal activities,” he stated.

Applauding President Tinubu’s pursuit for local government autonomy, he added that properly funded councils would aid the fight against insecurity, through job creation and the strengthening of traditional institutions and vigilante networks.

“The president was courageous enough to pursue local government autonomy through the Supreme Court, but implementation remains a challenge. I will insist that no governor should tamper with local government funds,” he said.
