What Super Eagles must do to qualify for 2026 World Cup

Despite a 2:1 victory over Lesotho on Friday, Nigeria’s chance at qualifying for the FIFA 2026 World Cup hangs still in the balance.

The Super Eagles battled Lesotho in a fierce contest to secure a much-needed three points, with the help of captain William Troost-Ekong and Akor Adams who scored the two winning goals for the team.

While yesterday’s victory was enough to keep hope alive, as the Super Eagles head into the final round of Group C fixtures, Nigeria remains third place in the group.

Benin Republic is currently ahead of the Eagles with three points and South Africa with one point.

For the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, the team must defeat Benin Republic by at least two goals in the last match slated for Tuesday October 14, while also hoping that South Africa records a loss or draw against Rwanda.

A convincing win by at least two goals will keep their chances realistic, as goal difference could be the determining factor in emerging winner in the group.

A win by South Africa against Rwanda would be the end of the Eagles’ 2026 World Cup qualification campaign, as only the group winners are guaranteed a ticket to the World Cup.

The Super Eagles vs Benin Republic match would be a decisive showdown that could determine their World Cup fate.

Their victory against Lesotho has however reignited some hope, after missing out of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Determination to win and some luck seem to be the Eagles’ only chance.
