US, Israel launch attack on Iran, explosions heard in Tehran, other Iranian cities
The United States and Israel have launched an attack on Iran, as US President Donald Trump said that “major combat operations” were in progress.
Trump in a nationwide address enumerated the threats that the theocratic regime led by Ayatollah Khamenei poses on the United States.
He stated in the address that Iran can “never have a nuclear weapon”, while urging the people of Iran to shelter in place as “bombs will be dropping everywhere”.
He further urged Iranians that their moment had come to take over the government as the US was backing them with all strength.
“it will be yours to take. This will be probably your only chance for generations,” Trump said.
Images show rising smoke in Tehran, as explosions have been heard in at least five cities across Iran.
The United States has been building up pressure on Iran to agree to a nuclear deal. The US President said on Friday he was unhappy with Iran’s nuclear talks negotiations.
The office of the Supreme Leader and the presidential office in Tehran were also targeted, according to reports.
Reports say that Military sites have been targeted in Kermanshah, Qum, Isfahan, Tabriz, Karaj and Iranian naval facilities in Kenarak, south of the country.
The Israeli Defence Force warned Iranian civilians to evacuate areas near military sites and installations ahead of the strikes.
