UBTH gets first female CMD

Professor (Mrs.) Idia Ize-Iyamu has been appointed as the first female Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), 52 years after its establishment.

The appointment letter which was issued and signed by the Minister of Health, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, and dated August 8 2025, read in part: “I am pleased to inform you that His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR has approved your appointment as Chief Medical Director, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin-City, Edo State for four (4)years in the first instance with effect from 18th August, 2025.

“This appointment is on such terms and conditions as provided by the authority establishing the University Teaching Hospitals, or as may be specified by Government in the future.”

The Minister further congratulated Prof. Ize-Iyamu, urging her to consolidate and improve on the state of the Hospital towards realizing its mandate.

“It is my expectation that you will continue to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure that the hospital continues to deliver quality healthcare services to all,” he added.

Prof. Ize-Iyamu who joined the hospital in 1997 as a Junior Registrar, and rose through the echelon to become an honorary consultant in 2005, also served as Head of Department for eleven years.

She is a Commonwealth Fellow and a Craniofacial Orthodontist. Prof Ize-Iyamu is currently the Dean of the School of Dentistry, University of Benin, with over 55 publications in local and international journals.
