Trump wants to topple our government, Venezuelan official says

The Attorney General of Venezuela Tarek William Saab has said that the United States President Donald Trump is making efforts to overthrow the Venezuelan Government, using his recent anti-narcotics campaign as a ruse.

Saab who is a close ally of Venezuelan President NicolĆ”s Maduro, disclosed this, according to a BBC report, stating that Trump wants to turn Venezuela into a “colony” of the US.

The President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro had on Thursday pleaded against a ā€œcrazy warā€ as a result of an escalating US military campaign against alleged drug cartels in Venezuela.

Trump had also accused President Maduro of heading a cartel, with the US President placing a $50 million bounty for his arrest.

The United States had deployed stealth warplanes and navy ships as part of its anti-narcotics efforts.

The Venezuelan leader had accused the US of “fabricating war” after it also ordered the deployment of the world’s largest warship to the Caribbean, the USS Gerald R Ford, which is yet to arrive.

The US guided-missile destroyer USS Gravely arrived in Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday, a dual-island nation off Venezuela’s coast. These would be the US largest military deployment to the Caribbean Sea in decades.

Regional tensions have flared as a result of the campaign, with Maduro accusing Washington of seeking regime change.

The US strikes, which began on September 2, have so far killed at least 43 people, according to US figures, through direct strikes to drug boats off South America, with President Trump saying that the US is “looking at land now” after getting “the sea very well under control”.

Asked about the possibility of US invading Venezuela by land, Saab said: “it shouldn’t happen, but we are prepared”. He also added that Venezuela was ready to resume dialogue with the US.

With the 2024 Venezuelan election widely condemned as neither free nor fair, the US, among many other nations do not recognise Maduro as Venezuela’s legitimate leader, as vote tallies from polling stations by the opposition showed its candidate had won the election convincingly.

But Saab stated that the US is seeking regime change in order to seize the country’s natural resources, including gold, oil and copper reserves.

Venezuela also claimed a false flag operation by the US; a political or military action carried out with the intention of blaming an opponent for it, although this would not be the first time the Venezuelan President would be making such claim.
