Trump to meet Venezuela’s opposition leader Machado next week

The United States President Donald trump said on Thursday that the Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado would be visiting Washington next week.

Trump disclosed this during an interview on Fox News where he responded to a question on his plans to meet with Machado, following US strikes on Venezuela that resulted in the capture of former President Nicolas Maduro.

Trump in his response said: “Well, I understand she’s coming in next week sometime, and I look forward to saying hello to her.”

Should the schedule go as planned, it would be Trump’s first meeting with Machado, who said she had not spoken to President Trump since she won the Nobel Peace Prize in October.

Trump had earlier dismissed the idea of working with Machado, creating more speculations around the future governance of Venezuela. “She doesn’t have the support within or the respect within the country,” the US President had said.

Trump while speaking with fox News said it might take some time for the South American country to be able to hold elections.

“We have to rebuild the country. They couldn’t have an election. They wouldn’t even know how to have an election right now,” Trump said.
