Super Falcons qualify for 2026 WAFCON after 3-1 aggregate victory over Benin Republic
The Super Falcons of Nigeria have qualified for the 2026 Womenās Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a 3-1 aggregate victory over their counterparts from Benin Republic.
The Super Falcons played a 1-1 draw with the Amazons of Benin during the second leg of the qualifiers which held on Tuesday in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Defender Ashleigh Plumtre gave Nigeria the lead at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Ogun, making it her first goal for the team since she switched allegiance from England to Nigeria in 2017.
A 61st minute goal from Yasmine Djibril however, gave the Amazons of Benin an equalizer, though it became too late to stage a comeback, with the Super Falcons keeping the scoreline the same until the end of the match.
A 2-0 victory during the first encounter in favour of Nigeria culminated in a 3-1 aggregate, hence securing them a spot at the forthcoming 2026 WAFCON in Morocco
Recall that Nigeria won the last WAFCON after a heroic comeback against Morocco in the final match, earning them a 10th title, having won it earlier in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
The 2026 WAFCON which would also serve as qualifiers for the 2027 Womenās Wold Cup in Brazil, is scheduled to hold between March 17 and April 3.
Semi-finalists at WAFCON are already guaranteed automatic spots in the tournament, while two more spots remain open for the continent at the intercontinental playoffs.
