Super Eagles beat Mozambique 4-0, qualify for AFCON quarter finals
Super Eagles of Nigeria have secured a spot in the quarter finals of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after defeating Mozambique 4-0 on Monday night during their encounter in the round of 16.
It was Mozambique’s first appearance in the knockout phase of an AFCON after qualifying as one of the best third-placed sides in the group stage.
Victor Osimhen scored twice as Nigeria made short work of Mozambique, by netting two goals in 25 minutes. The Galatasaray striker had started the game without wearing his trademark mask, but later restored the face covering.
Ademola Lookman, a former winner of the African Footballer of the Year award like Osimhen, opened the scoring after 20 minutes of play while also assisting in setting up the other three goals.
The record win is the biggest winning margin in an AFCON knockout encounter since Egypt beat Algeria 4-0 in the semi-finals at the 2010 tournament in Angola.
The Super Eagles who were unable to qualify for the FIFA 2026 World Cup will now face either Algeria or the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday in Marrakesh.
Algeria and DR Congo’s round of 16 clash is scheduled for Tuesday, as a victory for DR Congo would afford Nigeria the opportunity to exact revenge on The Leopards for denying them a chance at the 2026 World Cup during their last encounter in November 2025 at the play-offs.
