Russia launches largest air strikes on Kyiv, at least 21 killed, 86 injured

Russia has launched its largest ever barrage of drones and missiles attack on Kyiv, with at least 21 persons killed and 86 others injured, while also wreaking havoc on apartment buildings and various infrastructures across the Ukrainian capital.

According to Ukraine’s air force, Russia fired 496 drones and 74 missiles, including hard-to-intercept ballistic projectiles. The air force said it shot down 48 missiles and 476 drones.

Even as rescuers in Kyiv scoured the rubble for survivors, Russia has vowed to further intensify pressure on Ukraine after the strikes.

While the European Union had proposed new sanctions on Moscow, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky requested licences to manufacture Patriot air defence missiles from the United States, to boost his country’s defences.

Since its declaration of war on Ukraine, Russia has launched waves of missiles and drones on Ukrainian cities in more than four years of war, making it Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II.

According to reports, the sound of blasts started echoing late Wednesday into the early hours of Thursday, as Russian missiles and drones rained down on residential areas in the city centre.

The city’s mayor Vitali Klitschko said the strikes were the “enemy’s most massive attack on the capital.”

The state emergency services confirmed the death of at least 21 people, with 86 others injured, as Ukraine called on allies to send more air defences.

“Air defence supplies for Ukraine are an absolute and critical priority. We also very much count on a decision by the United States regarding licences for Patriots,” Zelensky said in a post on Facebook.

As a way of defending against Russian ballistic missiles, Ukraine is seeking to manufacture munitions for the US-made missile interceptor system, though domestic production may take time to set up, according to experts.
