Police redeploy Abuja DPO seen slapping man in viral video, launches investigation into incident

The FCT Commissioner of Police Miller Dantawaye, has ordered the redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ushafa Division who was seen in a video which went viral on Tuesday slapping a young man during an arrest; an incident which caused outrage among netizens.

The clip which was seen on X (formerly Twitter) saw widespread disapproval from Nigerians who condemned the act as abusive and unprofessional.

Reacting in a statement on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said the Commissioner condemned the officer’s action as unprofessional and unacceptable, negating the professional standards expected of police officers.

The statement read in part: ā€œThe Commissioner of Police strongly condemns the officer’s actions, which fall short of the high standards of discipline, civility, and professionalism expected of police officers.ā€

The statement said that while investigation into the incident had commenced, the officer involved had been redeployed to the headquarters, while admonishing Divisional Police Officers and their subordinates to maintain professionalism and courteousness in the discharge of their duties, as any act of misconduct or abuse of power would be met with strict disciplinary measures.

ā€œConsequently, the officer has been redeployed, and the situation is currently under investigation.

ā€œWhile administrative disciplinary steps are being taken, CP Dantawaye reminds all DPOs and their subordinates that they must remain professional, courteous, and law-abiding in the discharge of their duties.

ā€œHe warns that any act of misconduct or abuse of power will attract severe sanctions,ā€ the statement added.

Residents were also urged to maintain mutual respect and cooperation with law enforcement agents to enhance public safety and community policing efforts, encouraging them to report suspicious activities and misconduct.
