Peter Obi unveiled as NDC candidate for 2027 presidential election
Former governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party has been unveiled by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as its presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.
The unveiling was carried out on Saturday by the national leadership of the party led by former Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson.
Obi was thereafter handed the party’s flag being the party’s flag bearer for the forth coming general election.
Following his adoption, Obi announced former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso as his running mate.
The development comes days after former vice president Atiku Abubakar was declared winner of the presidential primary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Atiku and Obi had both joined the ADC in July 2025, but the former Anambra governor defected alongside Kwankwaso to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in May, due to intra-party conflict.
Obi was a major contender in the 2023 general election, with his campaign becoming a popular movement and with followers who became known as “Obidients”. His running mate Kwankwaso also has a large followership in a movement known as Kwankwasiyya.
Obi’s defection to the NDC and running a joint ticket with Kwankwaso may pose an even more formidable contest for the incumbent come 2027.
