Peter Obi: Care for the poor, Buhari said to me

Former Anambra State Governor and Presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi, while reminiscing on his encounter with the late former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, during a political campaign, described the former President as a man with sincere desire to fight the cause of the poor.

Peter Obi, while fielding questions from reporters at a prayer session organised in honour of late Buhari, noted that leaders should learn how to serve their country, with the knowledge that they would be called back by their creator someday.

“I had the opportunity of meeting late Muhammadu Buhari while I was campaigning, and I remember his words till today, and he said to me, please care for the poor Nigerians, and that is all I always remember, and I believe he did his best within his capacity.

“We have to all learn how to serve our country, knowing that one day we will all be called back by our creator,” Obi said.

He asserted that Buhari’s sincere appeal to fight and care for the poor bears testament to his life of simplicity.

Former President Buhari who died in London on Sunday at the age of 82 due to an undisclosed illness, was buried in his favourite spot at his compound in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday July 15, 2025
