Pastor Kumuyi says old Deeper Life marriage rules not biblical but administrative
The General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, has modified the Churchās marriage rules, stating that the rules are not scriptural but administrative guidelines.
Kumuyi who made the disclosure during the 2025 Global Family and Marriage Conference on Sunday, said that the rule banning a lady from visiting her intended had been cancelled, stating that such visitations are now allowed in company of an elder.
He also remarked that the six-month mandatory courtship period was no longer compulsory, adding that it was a human arrangement, not a biblical command.
“We just felt you need some time to know one another. And then we said one month will be too short, two months too short. So, why not six months? But it is not from the Bible,ā Kumuyi said.
The Deeper Life founder stressed on why Christians should be able to distinguish between Godās commandments and church traditions, while cautioning against viewing human regulations as divine mandates.
“As a Christian, you need to be so mature that you know the difference between the law of God and the principles in the church. Six months is all right, but itās not something inflexible. If we change it to three months, weāre not changing the Bible, because six months is not in the Bible,” the preacher noted, adding that the church marriage committees were set up to provide guidance, not to replace biblical authority.
“Thereās no marriage committee in the New Testament. We created it to help you, not because we can give you a chapter and a verse. It is church administration,ā he added, further cautioning leaders not to go beyond their limits.
