Obi accuses Tinubu of deploying false data to conceal Nigeria’s economic woes

The 2023 Labour Party presidential flag bearer, Peter Obi, has accused Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, for allegedly employing wrong data and statistics to cover up the country’s dwindling economy.

Obi who criticized the President for lampooning his data-driven campaign during the last election, stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, that Nigeria is currently ranked among the hungriest nation in the world, two years into Tinubu’s tenure.

“November 2022, while campaigning in Delta State, the then APC Presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, now the President, berated the other Presidential candidate (Peter Obi). He was ashamed to call his name, saying, ‘Na statistics we go chop? All I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians’.

“Now, two years into his four-year tenure, Nigeria is ranked among the hungriest nations in the world, with millions unsure of where their next meal will come from.”

Obi went on to accuse the President of relying on wrong statistics to misrepresent the true state of the Nigerian economy.

“President Tinubu is now overfeeding Nigerians with wrong statistics — from unemployment figures to inflation rates and now GDP rebasing — all to paint a rosy picture of our deteriorating economic and household conditions,” Obi added.

The former Labour Party presidential flagbearer emphasized that effective governance is predicated on sincerity of purpose and competence. “Governance is not a rocket science, it’s not a gamble. Like I have always reiterated, it requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity and compassion,” Obi said.
