Norway stun Brazil in 2-1 World Cup victory, proceed to quarter-finals
Norway stunned football giant Brazil in a 2-1 victory in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Erling Haaland scored two late goals to send Norway through to their first World Cup quarterfinal, condemning the five-time champions to their earliest exit since 1990.
Haaland’s brace takes him to seven goals in the tournament, leveling with Lionel Messi, as Norway set to take on either co-host Mexico or England in the quarterfinals.
Brazil’s Bruno Guimaraes lost a first half penalty before Haaland struck twice in the last 11 minutes to secure victory for his side at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
The last time Brazil failed to reach the quarterfinals was 36 years ago, when they lost 1-0 to archrivals Argentina in the Round of 16.
Brazil had won a penalty after a rocky start, after Kristoffer Ajer’s foul against Matheus Cunha in the box.
Though referee Ismail Elfath initially waved away the Brazilian’s appeals which left them furious, VAR’s intervention overturned the referee’s decision.
Neymar’s arrival in the 67th minute drew huge roars from the largely pro-Brazil crowd.
Norway however broke the deadlock, which came through an inevitable source, Haaland.
Haaland gave Norway yet another breathing space as he hammered low into the corner from the edge of the box in the 90th minute.
Neymar’s conversion of a penalty in the 10th minute of stoppage time, preceded by an unseemly spat with Nyland, following an elbow on Casemiro, could not alter the trajectory of the game which ended in a 2-1 victory for the Norwegians.
