Nigerian President accorded full military honours in Brazil, as both nations seek stronger socio-economic ties

The Nigerian President Bola Tinubu was on Monday, accorded full military honours by his Brazilian counterpart, President Luiz InĆ”cio Lula da Silva, at the Planalto Palace in BrasĆlia, the seat of the country’s presidency.

The event saw Tinubu being officially received by the President of Brazil as the Brazilian military rolled out a guard of honour.

The welcome ceremony featured a 21-gun salute, a display by the Brazilian presidential guard, and the national anthems of both countries before the Nigerian President inspected the guard of honour.

Tinubu who is currently in Brazil to strengthen bilateral relations with the South American nation, was accompanied by top government functionaries and diplomats.

Nigeria seeks to deepen global economic partnerships as Brazil clamours for stronger bonds with African nations, with both nations seeking to strengthen bilateral trade relations, promote investment, energy cooperation, and South-South partnerships.

Both leaders are also expected to hold closed-door discussions which would be accompanied by a joint press conference and the signing of several bilateral agreements.

President Bola Tinubu who arrived in Brazil on Monday had earlier called for renewed diplomatic and economic cooperation between Nigeria and the South American nation.

In a post via his official X handle (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Tinubu described the meeting with his Brazilian counterpart as a renewal of “historic relationship”, while expressing readiness for a deepened cooperation between both nations.

ā€œToday’s engagement marks the renewal of the historic relationship between Nigeria and Brazil.

ā€œI look forward to working with President Lula to deepen cooperation in agriculture, energy, trade, and culture, towards building a future of shared prosperity across the Atlantic,ā€ Tinubu said on X.
