NDC sets up 20-member panel to oversee governorship, national assembly primaries

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has set up a 20-member panel to supervise the screening and selection of aspirants vying for the governorship and national assembly tickets, in view of the 2027 general election.

This was made known in a statement on Friday by the party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Enekweizu, who said the committee was constituted in preparation for the forthcoming primaries, as directed by the party’s leadership.

“The committee is mandated to review, scrutinise, and consider the reports and recommendations of the National Screening Committee, and to take appropriate decisions on the screening outcomes of all aspirants.

“This process is designed to promote consensus-building and ensure the emergence of widely acceptable candidates through a free, fair, and credible mechanism,” he said.

The committee comprises Moses Cleopas as chairman and Enekweizu as secretary. Other members include: Sidi Bomi, Babatunde Ali, Mohammed Zuwo, Dr Danlami Arabs, Fredrick Owotorufa, Teddy Obey, Barnabas J. Ejisi, and Yunusa Tanko.

Also included in the committee are, Adedayo Ekong, Moses Paul, Buba Galadima, Aminu Abdulsalam, Danladi Abdulhamid, Udenta Udenta, Reuben Egwuaba, Dr Grace Onyekusiobi, Shittu Mohammed and Dudu Manuga.

The statement added that eligibility to purchase nomination forms by aspirants would be predicated on a successful screening process and clearance from the National Selection Committee.

According to the statement, the “process is designed to promote consensus-building and ensure the emergence of widely acceptable candidates through a free, fair, and credible mechanism.”

Enekweizu added that the party would however, in line with its guidelines, resort to direct primaries where consensus arrangements fail, in an exercise which would take place between May 28 and 30.
