Natasha storms NASS, barred from accessing complex

It was a dramatic moment on Tuesday at the National Assembly when the suspended Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan stormed the complex in order to resume legislative duties following a court judgement which declared her suspension unconstitutional.

The National Assembly had earlier written through its Clerk to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal counsel, that there was no such order made by Hon Justice B.F.N. Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, to the Senate, President of the Senate or the National Assembly.

Senate’s Spokesperson, Sen. Yemi Adaramodu, also reiterated the Red Chambers’ position on Sunday, that Natasha’s intent to resume plenary was based on a misinterpretation of the judgement delivered by Hon. Justice Nyako.

Akpoti-Uduaghan having promised to resume legislative activities on Tuesday, arrived at the National Assembly complex at about 12 noon, accompanied by Aisha Yesufu, and other supporters.

She was however barred from accessing the main building by armed security personnel at the main gate of the National Assembly which comprised the police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security personnel.

Security seemed to have been beefed up at the complex, resulting in long queues of vehicles at the main entrance to the nation’s legislative chambers, with security operatives carrying out thorough checks in order to prevent Akpoti-Uduaghan from accessing the complex.

Supporters were seen carrying placards; some of which read, “Akpabio Must Go”, “Protect Women’s Rights”, “We Stand With Senator Natasha”, among others.
