Messi’s father Jorge dies at 68 in Argentina
Argentine football star Lionel Messi has lost his father Jorge Messi.
According to the family, Jorge passed away on Friday night at the age of 68, at a medical clinic in Rosario, after a protracted illness.
Messi spent time with his father after the just concluded World Cup before returning to his club Inter Miami.
Jorge was instrumental to his son’s career, beginning with his early years at Barcelona. He acted as a crucial pillar of support, serving as his representative for several years.
“I always needed my dad’s approval, ever since I was a kid. After every match, I’d ask him what he thought of how I played,” Messi had previously said.
According to the family, Jorge spent his final months alternating between a medical center in Rosario and his home, together with his wife and children who kept him company.
Since the news of demise broke, several clubs have commiserated with the family, including Real Madrid and Lionel Messi’s youth team Newell’s Old Boys, alongside the Argentine FA.
Argentine FA wrote in a statement: “From here, we stand in solidarity with the entire family during this difficult time and send the most heartfelt, warm, and affectionate embrace. Strength to you all.”
Messi’s former club Barcelona said in a statement: “FC Barcelona thanks Jorge Messi for his commitment to our club, for entrusting us with the beginning and the most glorious years of his son Leo’s football career.”
