GEJ appointed U.N. Global Crisis Envoy
…making Jonathan first former African Head of State to occupy position
Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been appointed as the United Nations (UN) Global Crisis Envoy.
The appointment was sanctioned by the UN permanent Security Council members — United States(US), France, the United Kingdom, China and Russia — and the United Nations.
A similar role was once held by former UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair, as Middle East Envoy on behalf of the U.N., EU, U.S., and Russia.
This is the first time a former African Head of State would be appointed into such strategic diplomatic position, marking a groundbreaking milestone for the former Nigerian President.
The appointment has been commended by the global community, lauding Jonathan’s determination to promote democratic values and peaceful governance, and his commitment towards conflict resolution, as germane qualities needed for the unique assignment.
From a humble beginning as a university lecturer, Jonathan rose through the echelon as Commissioner, Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President, and then President of Nigeria. The current appointment has further nudged him onto the global stage as a peace and diplomatic icon and an exemplar in African leadership.
