By-elections: INEC declares Ikpea, Igbinedion winners in Edo
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate Joseph Ikpea and House of Reps candidate Omosede Igbinedion as winners of Saturday’s by-elections in Edo State.
The elections were conducted to fill two vacant seats at the National Assembly; both in the red and green chambers.
The seats formerly occupied by the incumbent Governor and Deputy Governor respectively in the State, became vacant owing to their emergence as winners of the 2024 gubernatorial election in Edo State.
While the Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo represented Edo Central senatorial district at the Nigerian Senate, his Deputy, Hon. Dennis Idahosa represented Ovia federal constituency at the House of Representatives, both of the All Progressives Congress.
At the collation centre in Ubiaja, INEC declared Joseph Ikpea of the APC winner, after securing a total of 105,129 votes to defeat his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rival Joe Okojie who polled a total of 15,146 votes.
Declaring Ikpea winner of the election, the Returning Officer, Prof. Omo-Iwoze remarked: “This Is the declaration. I, Prof. Omo-Iwoze, hereby certify that I am the Returning Officer for the 2025 Edo Central Senatorial District bye election, held on the 16th day of August, 2024.
“That Ikpea Joseph of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared winner of the election.”
For the Ovia federal constituency by-election, Omosede Igbinedion was declared winner at the collation center in Iguobazuwa, Ovia South-West local government area, having secured a total of 77,053 votes to defeat his PDP rival Johnny Aikpitanyi, who scored 3,838 votes, and Sandra Asemota of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) who trailed behind with 925 votes.
Declaring the electoral outcome, the Returning Officer for the Ovia federal constituency, Prof. Clement Ighodalo said: “This is the declaration. I, Professor Clement Ighodalo, hereby certify that I am the Returning Officer for the 2025 Ovia Federal Constituency bye election, held on the 16th day of August, 2024.
“That Omosede Igbinedion of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared winner of the election.”
