Bandits kill 30, abduct others in Niger State
Gunmen have killed at least 30 people and abducted several others in an attack on a village market in Borgu local government area of Niger State, Nigeria.
Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun said on Sunday, that the bandits stormed Kasuwan Daji market in Demo village, at about 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, burning stalls and looting food items.
“Over 30 victims lost their lives during the attack, and some persons were also kidnapped. Efforts are ongoing to rescue the kidnapped victims,” Abiodun said.
According to witnesses, the gunmen arrived on motorcycles and opened fire on the traders. Many described the occurrence as part of several raids that have been ongoing since Friday in nearby villages.
One of the witnesses Daudu Shakule said: “Women and children were not spared. There has been no presence of security forces since the attacks began. We are currently recovering corpses.”
The attack is coming barely weeks after over 300 children and staff of a Catholic school in the same Niger State were abducted by gunmen and released after almost a month in captivity.
