Advise your client to await Senate action, NASS writes Natasha’s attorney

The Nigerian National Assembly has written to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s attorney, Michael Jonathan Numa SAN, to advise the Senator to await the action of the Senate, in respect to a Federal High Court ruling which declared her suspension unconstitutional.

Recall that Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, had formally written to the Senate through her legal counsel, in a letter dated July 11, 2025, demanding compliance with the recent court judgement that declared her six-month suspension unconstitutional.

In the said judgement, a Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that the Senate’s action was excessive and amounted to a violation of the rights of her constituents to representation.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s lawyer then called on the Senate to act immediately in compliance with the court ruling to enable Akpoti-Uduaghan to resume her role without further delay.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan also notified the Senate of her intention to resume legislative activities on Tuesday July 15, 2025.

The National Assembly seemed to have disagreed with the interpretation of the judgement and in response, has now written through the Clerk to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal counsel, in a letter dated July 14, 2025,

According to the letter, “There is no order made on the 4th of July, 2025, by Hon Justice B.F.N. Nyako to the Senate, President of the Senate or National Assembly to comply with.

“The declaratory judgement merely advised the defendants to exercise their power to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and allow her to resume representing the people who sent her to represent them.”

The letter concluded that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s attorney advises his client to await the action of the Senate to exercise their power of recall which according to them is in line with the judgement of the court.
