Two suspected Ebola cases identified in north-east Nigeria
The Nigeria Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention (NCDC) said two suspected cases of the Eboa Virus Disease (EVD) had been identified in Nigeria’s north-east region.
The centre made the disclosure via a post on its official X handle (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.
It said while contact identification and listing are ongoing, with laboratory testing underway, both individuals had been isolated, as confirmation would be subject to results from the laboratory.
NCDC wrote: “Two suspected cases of Ebola disease have been identified in Nigeria’s North-East region. Both individuals have been isolated, contact identification and listing is ongoing, and laboratory testing is being conducted.
“Being classified as suspected cases does not mean they are confirmed Ebola cases; confirmation is subject to laboratory results.
“The public is advised to maintain good hand hygiene, practise enhanced sanitation and follow guidance from public health authorities. Further updates will be provided as verified information becomes available.”
Recall that one case of the EVD had earlier been confirmed at Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, with the government tracing 52 other identified contacts.
Nigeria’s health and social welfare minister, Muhammad Ali Pate, had said in a statement, that a woman who arrived in Nigeria on an international flight from Uganda, was diagnosed of the disease.
The index Nigerian case from the current outbreak and her husband had since been flown to Switzerland.
