Tinubu extends working vacation by few days
Nigeria’s president Bola Tinubu has extended his working vacation by a few days.
This was disclosed in a statement on Monday by the special adviser to the president on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu had departed Nigeria on August 30 for London to begin his working vacation, and proceeded to Paris where he met with French president Emmanuel Macron.
The statement said though Tinubu had been away, he had continued to monitor developments in the country.
“Since he began the vacation, President Tinubu has continued to keep in touch with home, directing the affairs of the nation,” Onanuga said.
Vice-president Kashim Shettima had represented Tinubu at designated official functions during his absence, according to the statement.
Shettima departed Nigeria for New York on Sunday to represent Tinubu at the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) where he is expected to present the country’s position and priorities on major global issues.
Shettima would participate in high-level meetings of strategic importance to Nigeria and the African continent, as well as join other world leaders at the reception for heads of delegation.
The statement said George Akume, secretary to the government of the federation, who had also been representing Tinubu at official events, would continue to perform such assignments.
The presidency further dismissed former vice-president Atiku Abubakar’s insinuations over Tinubu’s absence from UNGA, describing it as “baseless” and “irresponsible.”
The president is expected to return to Nigeria at the weekend.
