Fresh turmoil in British royal family over late princess Diana
Buckingham Palace on Wednesday issued a rebuttal after Charles Spencer, brother of late princess Diana, said Britain’s current monarch King Charles III – then Prince of Wales, had told him days after her sister’s death that “we’ll forget her soon enough.”
This was according to an extract published by the Daily Mail from Spencer’s forthcoming book.
The front page of the Daily Mail read,
“Charles’s astonishing outburst days after Diana’s death,” while the Daily Telegraph wrote, “Palace hits back at Diana’s brother.”
Spencer at the time of her sister’s demise, had proposed the exemption of Diana’s two sons, William and Harry, from their late mother’s funeral procession.
This according to Spencer had aggravated Charles into a “stream of anger” over the phone.
Princess Diana died on August 31 1997 in a fatal car crash, having suffered internal injuries resulting from the crash in Paris.
Her two sons, William and Harry who were ages 15 and 12 at the time, walked in the funeral procession alongside their father Charles, from whom their mother was divorced.
Diana who passed at the age of 36 was beloved in the United Kingdom and around the world, earning her the title, “The People’s Princess.”
The royal family was widely criticized over its reaction to her death initially, a situation that sparked a major constitutional crisis and public backlash.
Responding to Spencer’s latest claims in his soon-to-be-released memoir, the Palace questioned his judgement over Diana’s death.
“While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory in ways others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss,” a palace spokesperson said.
The late Queen Elizabeth had similarly rebutted the claims made by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in 2021, after the couple left the UK for North America in their desire to step back from royal life.
“Recollections may vary,” the Queen had said at the time.
Spencer’s book, “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister,” is a recollection of Diana’s life from a brother’s perspective, and it is set for release within the month.
The fresh royal turmoil has somewhat generated a setback for King Charles’s Thursday’s AI summit, where the controversial technology is to be discussed.
