Trump pledges $5,000 ‘dividend’ to Americans should Republicans win midterms
United States president Donald Trump has promised a $5,000 federal “dividend” to all adult Americans should Republicans retain majority in both chambers of Congress in November’s midterm elections.
He made the promise on Wednesday at the party’s first-ever midterm convention in Dallas, Texas.
“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them, because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States for $5,000.
“So, if the Republicans win, and you get $5,000, it will be called the Trump dividend,” the US president said.
Trump stated that Republicans always do well when he is on the ballot and therefore urged supporters and voters to pretend that he is on the ballot in the forthcoming midterm elections.
“When I’m on the ballot Republicans always do very well, so I’m asking you to pretend that I’m on the ballot,” he said.
He added that the promised $5,000 dividend would have to be spent within the United States.
“The only caveat I have is that the dividend that we’re making must be spent in the United States of America,” Reuters quoted him as saying.
The pledge comes amid campaigns by both parties for the midterm elections, as Republicans currently hold majorities in both chambers of Congress.
