Retired military officers stage protest over non-inclusion in FG’s salary increase for military personnel
Retired military officers took to the streets on Wednesday to protest the non-implementation of consequential adjustments to their pensions following recent salary increase for military personnel by President Bola Tinubu.
The veterans who were led by Rtd. Colonel Innocent Azubuike are protesting under the aegis of the Military Veterans Association of Nigeria.
Security personnel drawn from various security agencies in the country were stationed at the headquarters of the defence ministry in Abuja, to prevent a breakdown of law and order as a result of the protest.
Two armoured personnel carriers and more than 15 vehicles belonging to the police, the Nigerian army, immigration service and VIO were stationed at both ends of the roads within the protest venue.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu recently approved a new salary scale for serving military officers in order to improve their performance across all the theatres of operations in the country.
The retired officers are requesting inclusion in the recent salary increase, decrying a situation of being left out, having served the country diligently for 35 years.
The approved salary increase for military personnel, according to them, should result in a corresponding adjustment of pensions for retired personnel.
Armed soldiers have also been stationed at the defence headquarters and all its adjoining roads, resulting in traffic gridlock in both areas of deployment.
