Trump posts map labelling Hormuz Strait as new US territory
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday posted an image of a map on Truth Social, labelling the Strait of Hormuz as a “new US territory”, thereby escalating his comments on annexing the waterway.
Trump had last Friday at a political rally in New York hinted on taking the action, calling it “a great idea”, considering the presence of US naval assets in the region.
“After we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated — pretty soon I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States,” Trump had said.
The US president has repeatedly insisted that the Strait remains open and under US control, while blockading commercial access to and from Iran through the shipping route.
Iran had similarly said it was restricting commercial access through the Strait, declaring the waterway closed, even with the US Navy maintaining a blockade of Iranian ports.
Trump had earlier stated: “We have the blockade. No ships get through unless we want them to.”
The international waterway serves as a commercial route to at least 20 percent of global oil shipment.
The US has been on a campaign against Iran’s nuclear ambition, carrying out aerial strikes on its military infrastructure in an attempt to force the regime to abandon its nuclear program.
