PSG defeat Arsenal 4–3 on penalties to retain Champions League title
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has lifted the UEFA Champions League title after defeating Arsenal 4–3 on penalties, following a 1-1 tie that remained unbroken after a 120-minute of play on Saturday.
The Gunners had an early lead in the 6th minute, thanks to Kai Harvertz who surged into the penalty area with a superb finish beating goalkeeper Matvey Safonov.
PSG who was stunned by the early goal, gradually wrestled control of proceedings through the creativity of players like Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Vitinha.
Despite domination, PSG had a hard time breaking Arsenal’s defence line during the first half, with the momentum increasing at the start of the second half.
A 65th minute penalty awarded to the French giants after a VAR review, brought the game to a 1–1 level after a fine shot from Dembele, further turning the game into a gripping battle.
As neither side could find breakthrough during regulation time, the final went into extra time, even as chances remained scarce in the additional 30 minutes.
A great defence by PSG stopped Arsenal’s Martin Zubimendi who came close to winning it for his club in the dying minutes of extra time.
The unbroken deadlock led the Champions League final into penalty shootouts which ended 4–3 in favour of PSG, sparking wild celebrations among PSG players and supporters.
The French giants who won the title last year, retained the title as the 2026 Champions League winners through the momentous victory.
