Tinubu emerges APC presidential candidate, wins primary with 10.9m votes

Incumbent Nigerian president Bola Tinubu has won the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary election with approximately 11 million votes.

Following his victory at the nationwide primary, Tinubu has now emerged as the APC candidate for the 2027 general election.

Results from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were announced after collation in Abuja, as the outcomes of the direct primaries were presented by APC state governors, collation officials and state coordinators to the Presidential Primary Election Committee headed by former senate president Pius Anyim.

Tinubu defeated his fellow aspirant and only challenger in the race, Stanley Osifo from Edo State, with a broad margin, in a presidential primary election conducted in 8,809 wards across the 774 local government areas of the country, securing 10,999,162 votes, while Osifo got 16,503 votes.

Tinubu polled the following votes in the southwest: Lagos, 814,988; Ogun, 322,485; Ondo, 181,996; Oyo, 142,754; Osun, 100,888 and 85,340 votes in Ekiti. Whereas Osifo secured 1,186 votes in Lagos and 929 votes in Oyo.

In the northwest, the president secured 618,914 votes in Kaduna, 500,852 votes in Kano and 467,003 votes in Katsina. Others include: Gombe, 450,517; Sokoto, 301,000; Zamfara, 321,579 and Kebbi 292,972 votes, with Osifo recording few votes.

In the north central, he secured the following: Kwara 310,990; Nasarawa, 285,436; Plateau, 241,720; Kogi, 197,370; Benue, 374,787 and Niger, 175,487 votes. He further secured 36,103 votes in the FCT while Osifo secured none.

In the south-east Tinubu got 582,960 votes in Imo, 207,579 in Ebonyi, 383,382 in Enugu, 161,005 in Abia, and 43,034 in Anambra, while in the south-south he polled 389,197 in Akwa Ibom, 407,646 in Delta, 227,192 in Bayelsa and 280,082 in Rivers, while Osifo recorded a total of 1,391 votes in Abia and Anambra States.

Tinubu emerged winner with a total of 10,999,162 votes while his rival Osifo who came distant second secured 16,503 votes.

Announcing the election results, the chairman of APC Presidential Primaries Election Committee, Pius Anyim noted:

“Mr. President, across the country, a total number of 12,643,306 registered voters were registered in our party.

“Mr. President, for the purpose of this election, 11,069,756 voters were accredited. Mr. President, after the accreditation, 11,015,665 voters cast their votes. And after we completed the votes, I am delighted to announce, on behalf of the committee, that the aspirants received vote as follows: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, received a total number of 10,999,162 votes. Mr. Stanley Osifo received a total of 16,503 votes.”

Declaring Tinubu winner of the election, he stated: “Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, it is therefore my duty as a returning officer for this primary election to declare President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, having satisfied the requirements of APC constitutions and guidelines, and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner of the presidential primary election, and returned as the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the 2027 general elections.”

Tinubu was later issued a Certificate of Return from the national chairman of the party, Nentawe Yilwatda and handed the APC flag.

The president further thanked party members for their support in his acceptance. “Thank you all of you. You changed the landscape, looking at the figure that you returned,” he said.
