Nigeria-US air strikes kill over 20 ISWAP terrorists, defence headquarters says

The Nigerian army in collaboration with the United States Africa Command, carried out coordinated air strikes that wiped out more than 20 fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in North-eastern Nigeria.

This was disclosed by the Nigerian Defence Headquarters in a statement on Monday, which said terrorist hideouts around Metele in Borno State were targeted after intelligence reports revealed that insurgents were gathering within the area.

The Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Samaila Uba described the operation as part of an intensified campaign to cripple terrorist networks and dismantle their operational bases.

“The Defence Headquarters, in close coordination with United States Africa Command, wishes to update the general public on the continuation of coordinated operations against ISIS militants across North-East Nigeria,” he said.

The military revealed that a series of calculated air assaults that successfully neutralised dozens of ISWAP fighters were carried out through surveillance operations that detected a fresh convergence of terrorist elements.

Uba reaffirmed the military’s resolve to continue aggressive operations in defence og Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“Terrorists who threaten our citizens, communities, and national stability will be located and defeated. There will be no safe haven for terrorists anywhere in Nigeria,” he stated.

This comes days after Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, second in command of the Islamic State terrorist group, ISIS, was eliminated in a joint military operation by the United States and the Nigerian armed forces.

The US President Donald Trump made the disclosure on Truth Social on Friday while acknowledging the efforts of both countries in the operation.

Trump said the terrorist leader was hiding in Africa when he was taken out, noting that the operation would weaken the activities of the terrorist group in the region.
