Saudi Arabia says East-West pipeline restored to full capacity, bypasses Strait of Hormuz
Saudi Arabia said it had restored the East-West pipeline to its original 7 million barrels per day production capacity, resuscitating a crucial link for oil exports through the Red Sea.
The pipeline built during the Iran-Iraq War to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, provides an alternative route to the Gulf.
The 1,200 km pipeline transports crude from eastern fields directly to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, allowing the continuation of exports even if the Hormuz maritime route is blocked or under threat, thereby reducing reliance on the vulnerable Strait.
One of its 11 pumping stations was damaged last week by an Iranian strike, reducing output by 700,000 bpd.
The Red Sea terminals have seen a quadrupled crude shipment since the end of February, as a work around alternative after the shutdown of the Strait.
Saudi’s energy ministry announced the successful restoration of the country’s pumping capacity through the East-West pipeline within a short period of time.
“This quick recovery reflects the high operational resilience and crisis management efficiency of Saudi Aramco and the Kingdom’s energy ecosystem as a whole, thereby enhancing the reliability and continuity of supplies to local and global markets, and supporting the global economy,” the ministry noted.
Meanwhile work is ongoing to restore the Khurais field to full production capacity.
Saudi energy facilities were targeted by Iranian strikes after the commencement of the US-Israeli bombardment on Iran on February 28.
