Kano Gov Yusuf defects officially to APC with 22 state legislators, 9 federal lawmakers
The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has officially decamped to the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly and 9 House of Representatives members.
The Governor who announced the decision on Monday, at a political event held at the Kano State Government House, said his action was aimed at promoting governance and development in the state.
He noted that the decision was born out of extensive consultations with elected representatives and stakeholders in the state.
“After wide consultation, 22 out of 24 members of the Kano State House of Assembly and nine out of 14 members of the House of Representatives have concluded that we should join the APC.
“We are choosing partnership rather than polarisation. Political parties are vehicles; the destination is to bring positive change to the people of Kano. Judge this decision by the work we do for the people of Kano,” the Governor said.
The Kano State APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, in his response, described the defection as a bold move. “This is a bold decision. APC members in Kano will remain loyal to Governor Abba Yusuf as he joins the party,” he noted.
Also speaking at the event was the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin. “I urge all my supporters to support Governor Abba Yusuf so that we can work together for the progress of Kano State,” he said.
Former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje who was also at the event, noted that Governor Yusuf has become the leader of APC in Kano. “Governor Abba Yusuf is a progressive politician and deserves to be in the APC. From now on, he is the leader of the party in Kano State. Every member and leader of the party is 100 percent with him,” Ganduje stated.
Recall that the Governor had earlier resigned his membership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), stating that his exit from the party was aimed at fostering peace and unity in the state.
Governor Yusuf had attributed his exit to internal crises within the party and the need to protect the overall interests of the people of Kano State, adding that his decision was not taken out of bitterness but after a careful consideration, while bearing public interest in mind.
